Irfaan is a qualified Chartered Accountant CA(SA) who qualified in 2001. After completing his articles at PwC he completed a further 2 years before joining Ernst & Young's Corporate Finance team. While at EY he worked locally and abroad, including in their London and Guernsey Channel Islands offices.
During his time in corporate finance at PwC and EY, Irfaan worked on projects in a variety of sectors and focused on valuations, due diligence and mergers & acquisitions. During this time he also took on the risk management role for EY corporate finance offices across Sub Saharan Africa.
Irfaan joined the University of the Western Cape in February 2015 after 15 years in Corporate Finance (locally and overseas). Being a UWC alumnus, the role presented an opportunity to venture into a challenging sector whilst becoming part of the team building the next chapter of UWC’s growth as one of the country’s leading universities.
Irfaan is responsible for developing/managing sustainable 3rd stream income and diversifying the revenue base. He and his team work on the following activities:
Property related:
- Management of UWC’s commercial tenants (premises on and off campus);
- Development of the retail component of UWC buildings
- Representing UWC as Trustee on body corporates where UWC is sectional title holder
- Managing one of UWC’s student accommodation projects
- Venue management:
- Generating income from hiring out UWC venues
- Managing the timetable planning for the academic year
IP Commercialisation:
- Providing support to the Technology Transfer Office iro commercialisation of IP developed at UWC
- Board member on UWC Innovations (Pty) Ltd, a new company that pursues UWC generated commercial opportunities
Special projects:
- Revamp of the UWC Student Centre
- Facilitation of Samsung’s "App Development" collaboration with UWC
- Establishment of the Digital Hub that will host UWC’s new Virtual Reality (VR) and Augmented Reality (AR) software
- Establishment of a Food Court at UWC’s new Community Health Sciences building in Bellville
Management consulting:
- Developing a management consultancy framework (financial and risk management) for researchers who want to provide consulting services to 3rd parties.
Continuing Education:
- Marketing of UWC short courses and building a new ‘demand driven’ business
New business opportunities:
- Accepting applications/enquiries from, or issuing tenders to, vendors looking to operate a business on campus
