Mr. Gasant Abarder

Gasant Abarder is a journalist who has worked in print, radio and television newsrooms in both Cape Town and Johannesburg over a period of 21 years. The latter decade of his working career was spent in senior editorial roles – including as deputy editor of the Daily Voice, editor of the Cape Argus for two stints, editor of Eyewitness News in Cape Town and editor of the Cape Times. Abarder was featured in the 2013 edition of the Mail & Guardian’s prestigious Young South Africans 2013, has previously served as the deputy chairperson of the South African National Editors’ Forum and was a weekly columnist for the Weekend Argus. He holds a BTech Degree in Journalism (cum laude) from the Cape Peninsula University of Technology.
He is currently employed as the Media, Marketing and Communications Manager for the University of the Western Cape (UWC) since joining in 2018. He is also the spokesperson for the University. The purpose of his role as Media, Marketing and Communications manager is to enhance the Standing and Profile of the University. Abarder is a leading member of a task team behind next year's 60th anniversary celebrations at UWC in which the University will use the milestone to amplify its research and academic programme in the space of alleviating joblessness, social justice and community engagement. Abarder also serves on the board of the UWC Media Society - a student-led initiative to revive student media at the University.
