Alon Stern is a scientist, an explorer and an entrepreneur. Alon did his undergrad at the University of Cape Town, majoring in Mathematics. In 2009, Alon moved to the US on a Fulbright Scholarship to work on his PhD at the Courant Institute of Mathematical Science at NYU. Next, Alon worked at Princeton University, coding and developing numerical climate models with a goal to project sea level rise. Alon has traveled in over 80 countries, including Antarctica and Greenland, where he collected measurements as part of his PhD.
In September 2017, Alon together with Irshad Kathrada and Terence Goldman released Slide, an app that allows users to send money to any email or number for free. Slide was inspired by Venmo, a hugely successful payment platform in the US, and South Africa’s challenges around accessibility, banking costs and payment options. Designed to look similar to social tools like WhatsApp or Facebook Messenger, Slide even allows users to personalise with emojis.
